Overview
Adaptec's second-generation External RAID
Contollers are designed to triple the speed
of data throughput and help you easily
migrate to Fibre Channel while protecting
your initial external controller investment.
These controllers are the ideal solution
for customers who demand outstanding
performance, easy host-interface upgrade
capability, and simplified array configura-
tion and management for the midrange to
high-end storage markets.
The Board-Based External RAID con-
trollers for storage subsystem backplane
integration are:
AEC-5312: (1) Ultra2 SCSI host
channel-to-(2) Ultra2 SCSI device chan-
nels, supporting up to 30 hard disk drives
AEC-7313: (1) Fibre Channel host
channel-to-(3) Ultra2 SCSI device chan-
nels, supporting up to 45 hard disk drives
Key Benefits
Unmatched Computing Performance
Adaptec's AEC External RAID Controllers
deliver triple the speed of alternatives. Their
sequential reads and writes of more than
60 MByte/sec in RAID 3 and 5 ensure that
data streams to video and multimedia
applications, fast and free of interruptions.
And the highly-modular architecture of
these controllers incorporates 80 MByte/sec
Ultra2 SCSI (LVD) host and device channels,
an optional 100 MByte/sec Fibre Channel
host channel, and a new SDRAM dual-PCI
XOR memory controller.
Scalable, Flexible, Easy To Upgrade
Protect your investment. Users can upgrade
to Fibre Channel with a simple field-
replaceable daughterboard addition to
the original base controller. Adaptec's
controllers also feature on-line capacity
expansion,
allowing users to add capacity
without having to take the array off-line
for booting or reconfiguration. And AEC
External RAID Controllers are operating
system independent, so they can be
deployed with any server, without having
to purchase additional software drivers.
The
architecture of these controllers enables
storage to be separated from the server by
up to 12 meters for Ultra2 SCSI, and up to
10 kilometers for Fibre Channel.
Mission-Critical Availability
Adaptec's External RAID controllers
feature active-active controller failover and
multi-initiator support with I/O data path
redundancy. Array verification ensures that
parity matches the data on RAID 3, 4, or 5
configurations, or in the case of RAID 1,
ensures that the mirrored copies are identical.
Other features of these controllers contribut-
ing to assured data availability include ECC-
protected disk cache, global spares, controller
and device hot-swap, NiMH disk cache
battery backup, and standard PC-type lithium
disk battery for continuous RTC power
during unit shut-down.
The AEC External RAID Controllers'
extensive feature set also includes SAF-TE
environmental monitoring with event
notification via e-mail, pager, fax or auto-
matic calls, and event logging, in addition
to SMART.
Easy Management
Adaptec's External RAID Controllers sup-
port several options for easy configuration
and management. These include a serial
port (RS-232) from a PC or VT100
terminal, and CI/O Management Software
and inband GUI through the host's interface.
Support is also provided for third-party
implementation of GUI utilities with
Adaptec's API Developer's Kit.
