ATM UltraLite Port Controller (APC UltraLite)
Introduction
The Agere Systems ATM Port Controller (APC)
UltraLite IC is part of the ATLANTA chip set that
provides a highly integrated, innovative, and
complete VLSI solution for implementing the ATM
layer of an ATM switch system. The ATLANTA
chip set allows for high-performance, feature-rich,
and cost-effective ATM switches that are scalable
over a wide range of switching capabilities.
The APC is available in three product tiers to
satisfy different application requirements:
s
APC
s
APC Lite
s
APC UltraLite
The APC products can be used with the Agere
Systems PayloadPlusTM components or on its
own.
APC UltraLite Products
This product brief covers the features of the APC
UltraLite product tier. The APC UltraLite products
are designated for applications that require a
maximum of 2.5 Gbits or less of switching
capacity using up to eight fabric ports.
The APC UltraLite has three configurations:
s
APC UltraLite (max configuration)
s
APC UltraLite (mid configuration)
s
APC UltraLite (basic configuration)
Features
The key benefits of the APC UltraLite products
are as follows:
s
Provides a comprehensive, single-chip solution
for implementing all ATM layer functions
needed at an ATM switch port.
s
Can be configured as an ATM switch port card
(full duplex) or as a stand-alone N:1
concentrator.
s
Performs ATM layer user network interface
(UNI) and network node interface (NNI)
management functions.
s
Provides full-duplex UTOPIA compatible
interfaces.
s
Provides an interface to ATLANTA switch
fabrics to facilitate construction of scalable
network switches.
s
Provides a generic, 32-bit microprocessor
interface with interrupt that supports high-
speed read/write direct memory access (DMA)
modes.

ATLANTA ATM UltraLite Port Controller (APC UltraLite)
June 2001

Figure 2: APC UltraLite Block Diagram
The APC UltraLite can receive and transmit ATM cells
from one or two independently configured industry-
standard UTOPIA Level 2 interfaces. Once the ATM cells
are received, the APC UltraLite performs header look up
and translation, updates the virtual connection table,
performs policing, manages both STATIC and DYNAMIC
thresholds, schedules the traffic, and then transmits the
cells to the switch fabric. Figure 2 shows the APC
UltraLite components.
External Interfaces
The APC UltraLite has the following interfaces:
s
Data Path Interfaces--one or two 8-bit or 16-bit
independent industry-standard UTOPIA Level 2
interfaces for the data path input and output.
s
Memory Interfaces--up to 64K connections for header
lookup and virtual connection tables.
s
Enhanced Service Interface (ESI)--bidirectional
24-bit external interface that supports scheduling
functions for ABR Virtual source and destination
features as well as customer-defined functions.
s
Microprocessor Interface (MPI)--32-bit asynchronous
external interface to the microprocessor for
configuration, maintenance, statistics, read/writes, and
interrupt services.
s
Switch Fabric Interfaces (SXI)--8-bit parallel data bus
operating at 100 MHz for servicing the ATLANTA
switch fabric with a loopback mode for stand-alone
configurations.
Global Features
The features shared by all APC UltraLite products are:
s
Bidirectional bandwidth (311 Mbs)
s
Maximum number of fabric ports, virtual output queues
