AHA4524 TPC EVB
TURBO PRODUCT CODE EVALUATION BOARD
The AHA4524-EVB is a hardware evaluation
board that allows incorporation of the AHA4524
Turbo Product Code (TPC) device in a prototype
communications system or laboratory test
environment. It can be used to demonstrate the
forward error correction (FEC) performance gain
that TPCs offer over other available solutions. The
EVB supports simultaneous encoding and decoding
of a serial data stream with rates up to 31 Mbits/sec.
The board can be programmed and configured via a
RS-232 interface connected to a PC running the
included configuration software to support a wide
variety of code configurations.
The AHA4524-EVB can be interfaced with a
standard Bit Error Rate Tester (BERT) for data
source and data sink or other communications
hardware incorporated on the uncoded side of the
EVB. On the channel side of the EVB, coded data is
output from the encoder to be connected to a modem
or other hardware channel model and then input
back into the EVB after demodulation.
The AHA4524 device is a single-chip Turbo
Product Code (TPC) Forward Error Correction
(FEC) Encoder/Decoder. This device integrates
independent TPC encoder and decoder functions,
and can be configured for full or half duplex
operation. In addition to TPC coding, the device
includes helical interleaving, CRC computation and
detection, and pseudo random bit stream
scrambling. Each of these functional blocks can be
independently bypassed. When connected with a
PC for configuration via the RS-232 interface the
AHA4524-EVB is fully programmable for a wide
range of coding configurations and allows all
registers in the AHA4524 device to be accessed for
configuration.

FUNCTIONAL OVERVIEW
The AHA4524-EVB can be interfaced to a
standard Bit Error Rate Tester (BERT) or other user-
supplied hardware for data source and sink. The
serial input data is TPC encoded and then
transmitted out of the EVB through the SMA
connectors along with an output clock. The encoded
data can then be passed through a modulator, user
channel, and demodulator before being input back
into the EVB for TPC decoding. Data input to the
decoder is supplied as a serial data stream of up to 4
bits per input soft metric along with a channel rate
clock. The serial data stream is TPC decoded and
output from the EVB with an output clock.
The user can control the configuration of the
AHA4524 encoder and decoder from an external
PC running in the Windows environment connected
via the serial port. A wide range of coding choices
are supported with all of the registers in the
AHA4524 device accessible to the user. On board
LEDs are provided to indicate status of coding
operation during operation.
Built in loop back modes are provided that
internally connect the encoded output data to the
decoder input interface for test and monitoring
purposes. A pass through mode is also supported in
the EVB to facilitate ease of integration of the EVB
into a user system.
The AHA4524-EVB is compatible for
interfacing with the Texas Instruments TI C5402
DSK evaluation board. The user can develop
firmware for configuration and control of the
AHA4524-EVB board via the DSP serial data
stream using the TI DSK.
