Serial Cable for PC File Transfer
Model 232NM9
The Model
232NM9
is a 10' long null modem cable for connecting two PCs or laptops
using their RS-232 COM ports. Windows 95
TM
includes a Direct Cable Connection program
that allows one PC to access files from another PC through the serial port without a LAN.
This cable also enables the linking of PCs through the DOS INTERLINK device driver. The
232NM9 has DB-9S (female) connectors on both ends.
Windows 95:
1) Install Direct Cable Connection (Available with Windows 95)
on both the Host and the Guest computer.
a) Go to
Control Panel
b) Double Click on
Add/Remove Programs
c) Click on
Windows Setup
tab
d) Click on
Communications
tab
e) Click on
Details
button
f) Check box labeled
Direct Cable Connection
if not already checked
g) Click
Okay
button
2) Connect serial ports through the null-modem cable
3) Start Direct Cable Connection on each computer
a) Go to
START MENU/PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES
b) Click on
Direct Cable Connection
c) Follow setup procedures described
Some Hints:
1) The Host computer must be set up for file sharing.

e) Check the box enabling
File Access
f) Click on
Okay

g) Click on

j) Windows will have to be restarted to enable file sharing
2) Any files that you want to share should be marked as such through Windows Explorer.
a) Highlight the file or folder, click on
File
from the task bar, then select
Properties
b) Click on
Sharing
tab
c) Check the box labeled
Shared As
d) The name entered will be what the folder is called on the Guest computer. Entering a password will require that you enter the
password on the Guest computer to access the file.
Most of this information should be prompted on the Host computer when starting Direct Cable Connection.
Different network setups already installed in the two computers may make some options look slightly different.
If you have any questions, consult the Windows 95 user's manual, interactive help screens, or contact B&B technical support.
DOS:
1) Connect serial ports through null-modem cable
2) Run INTERSVR.EXE on the Host computer
3) Load the INTERLNK.EXE device driver from CONFIG.SYS on the Client computer. (DEVICE=
path
\INTERLINK.EXE). You will
have to reboot to activate the new CONFIG.SYS
Drive names will be added to Client computer in sequence for access to Host drives.
