The E5M is a robust rotary encoder with a metal enclosure and finger-latching connector. This optical
incremental rotary encoder is designed to easily mount to and dismount from an existing shaft to provide
digital position feedback. The rugged aluminum construction and latching connector make the E5M ideal
for installations where the encoder may be exposed and vulnerable to impact.
The E5D consists of five parts: base, cover, hub/code wheel and encoder module.
The base is constructed of machined aluminum and can be mounted using either a 2 or 3 hole pattern.
The base can be precisely positioned with respect to the motor shaft by using a centering tool.
The cover is constructed of machined aluminum for high impact resistance. Two 4-40 flat head screws
secure the cover to the base plate. The cover has been clear anodized and is engraved with the
encoder modules pin-out.
The cover screws are stainless steel 4-40 flat heads (.625" long) that are recessed into the cover.
The hub/code wheel can be specified to install on shafts from .079" to .394" (2mm to 10mm) in diameter.
Standard diameters are stocked. There is a quick turn around time for special order diameters.
The encoder module incorporates a lensed LED light source and a monolithic photo detector array with
signal shaping electronics to produce the two channel bounceless quadrature TTL outputs. Modules
are also available with a 3rd channel (index) that outputs one pulse per revolution for an absolute
reference.
The connector has 5 conductors, is polarized and latches into features on the encoders cover.
Depressing the latch tab allows the connector to be unplugged.

Centering Tool:
This reusable tool provides a simple method for accurately centering the E5M base
onto the shaft. It is recommended for the following situations:
When using mounting screws smaller than 4-40.
When the position of the mounting holes is in question.
When using the 3-hole mounting pattern.
When using the T-option transfer adhesive.
Instructions: When mounting encoder base, slide centering tool down shaft until
it slips into centering hole of encoder base. Tighten mounting screws, then remove
centering tool.
Accessories:
This adapter enables the E5M to mount to a 1.812" diameter bolt circle. The
mounting holes, spaced 1.812" apart, will accept #4 screws.
Note: The required shaft length needs to be a minimum of .570 inches long
when using this option.
P-option:
This adjustable version of the above adapter allows the E5M to be rotated
15 while operating for index orientation. Use three 4-40 x 1/4" screws (sold
separately). When installing the hub, rotate the index to the approximate
position. After assembly, with the 3 screws loose, rotate while operating to
the desired index location and tighten.
R-option:
The H-option adds a hole to the housing for the shaft to pass through.
Shafts =<.157", a .203" diameter hole is supplied.
Shafts from .187" to .250", a .295" diameter hole is supplied.
Shaft =>.312", a .438" diameter hole is supplied.

1. Base Mounting
Secure base to mounting surface using two
screws on .750" bolt circle or 3 screws on .823"
bolt circle. If a centering tool is used, slip it over
shaft and into center hole of base. Tighten mount-
ing screws. Remove centering tool.
Orientate module with connector pins towards
top. Tilt module so that module loops clear base
pedestal and disk fits into slot of module. Slide
module in direction of arrow until module leads are
centered over the pedestal. Press module over
aligning pins on base. Secure with two 4-40 1/2"
pan head screws (supplied).
4. Encoder Module Installation
Place housing (cover) over assembly and
secure with two 4-40 x 5/8" cover screws
(supplied).
5. Cover Installation
Slip hub disk assembly over shaft with disk side up until
it bottoms out against spacer tool. Tighten set screw
with hex wrench provided while pressing down on
hub.

Be sure to keep different diameters, resolutions and
options separated. The resolution of the optoelectronic
modules and the code wheels must match. Index and
non-index parts cannot be mixed since the optical
patterns are different.
An additional identifier is stamped on each optoelec-
tronic module. The 2-channel (non-index) version can
be identified by a number 9100 or 9200. A 9140
identifies the 3-channel (index) version. One letter
stamped on each module specifies the resolution as
shown in the adjacent table.
